* lisp/files.el (major-mode-remap-alist): New custom var.
(set-auto-mode--last): New var.
(set-auto-mode-0): Obey `major-mode-remap-alist`.
* doc/emacs/modes.texi (Choosing Modes): Document `major-mode-remap-alist`.
* lisp/progmodes/cperl-mode.el: Recommend the use of
`major-mode-remap-alist` over the crude `defalias` solution.
* lisp/textmodes/tex-mode.el (tex--guess-mode): Simplify.
(tex--redirect-to-submode): Obey `major-mode-remap-alist`.
The differences between this and the existing `cperl-ps-print-init'
are that some faces had been moved from italic to bold or vice versa,
and that there were some obsolete or non-existent face names
mentioned. So there is no point to keeping it given that it's been
commented out since 1999.
* lisp/progmodes/cperl-mode.el: Delete code commented out since 1999:
a slightly different, duplicate definition of `cperl-ps-print-init'.
* lisp/subr.el (point-at-eol, point-at-bol): Make XEmacs compat
aliases obsolete in favor of `pos-bol'/'line-beginning-position' or
'pos-eol'/'line-end-position'. Update callers.

Another candidate was 'M-s i'. Discussion on emacs-devel has led me
to conclude that most people will find 'M-g i' more intuitive and thus
easier to memorize.
* lisp/bindings.el (goto-map): Bind 'imenu' to 'M-g i' globally.
* etc/NEWS: Document the change.
* doc/emacs/programs.texi (Imenu):
* lisp/progmodes/cperl-mode.el: Replace 'M-x imenu' with 'M-g i'.
My commit 3d49ad73e5 from 2021-09-143 had a flaw causing bad
fontification and indentation after anonymous subroutines with
a prototype.
* lisp/progmodes/cperl-mode.el (cperl-find-pods-heres): Correctly
process prototypes in anonymous subroutines
* test/lisp/progmodes/cperl-mode-tests.el
(cperl-test-fontify-attrs-and-signatures): new tests for various
combinations of attributes, prototypes, and signatures
* test/lisp/progmodes/cperl-mode-resources/proto-and-attrs.pl: new
test source

New tests for unicode identifiers.
(cperl-test-imenu-index): Add a unicode identifier to the test.
* test/lisp/progmodes/cperl-mode-resources/grammar.pl: Add a
function with non-ASCII name for imenu tests.
Following advice by Mattias Engdegård, most uses of rx-to-string
were eliminated, and rx sequences used instead to define Perl
grammar components.
* lisp/progmodes/cperl-mode.el: (cperl-block-declaration-p): New
function, replaces regexp literals.
(cperl-imenu--function-name-regexp-perl): Deleted, use rx
sequences to find imenu entries instead.
(cperl-indent-line): Use rx components instead of regexp literals.
(cperl-sniff-for-indent): use `cperl-block-declaration-p' to
increase accuracy, use rx sequence for labels to replace
inaccurate regexp literals.
(cperl-block-p): Replace inline comment by docstring. Use
`cperl-block-declaration-p'.

inserting text with elisp (related to Bug#28962).
(cperl-process-here-doc): Add syntax-type `here-doc-start'.
(cperl-find-pods-heres): Make sure that the results of this

Add test cases for "empty" here-documents and inserting at the
edges of a here-document.
* lisp/progmodes/cperl-mode.el (cperl-mode): Use
`cperl-font-lock-syntactic-face-function'.
(cperl-commentify): Add a docstring, eliminate unused formal
parameter `noface'.
(cperl-is-here-doc-p): New function to detect whether "<<" starts
a here-document, factored out from `cperl-find-pods-heres'.
(cperl-here-doc-functions): New variable: List of functions which
allow here-documents as parameters, for use in
`cperl-is-here-doc-p'.
(cperl-process-here-doc): New function, factored out from

after non-interactive (elisp) changes (Bug#14343, Bug#28962).
