Check for invalid GTK+ monitor scales

* src/gtkutil.c (xg_get_gdk_scale): Return 1 for invalid scales,
INT_MAX for too-large scales.  All callers changed to assume the
result is valid (Bug#20432).
(xg_frame_set_char_size, xg_update_scrollbar_pos):
Calculate scale only if needed.

show ASCII approximations instead.
